Water and Earthquakes

چکیده

This open access book explores the interactions between water and earthquakes, including recent concerns about induced seismicity. It further highlights that a better understanding of response system to disturbances such as earthquakes is needed safeguard resources, shield underground waste repositories, mitigate groundwater contamination. Although effects on streams have been reported for thousands years, this field has only blossomed into an active area research in last twenty years after quantitative continuous documentation data became available. volume gathers important advances made over past decade, which date scattered form articles various scientific journals.

Streamflow and water well responses to earthquakes.

Earthquake-induced crustal deformation and ground shaking can alter stream flow and water levels in wells through consolidation of surficial deposits, fracturing of solid rocks, aquifer deformation, and the clearing of fracture-filling material. Although local conditions affect the type and amplitude of response, a compilation of reported observations of hydrological response to earthquakes ind...

Luminous Phenomena of Earthquakes: Observations and Theories

Over the past few years, different theories (piezoelectric, positive holes, friction-vaporization, exo-electron emission, tribo- or fracture electrification) have been presented for the interpretation of earthquake lights. Although these theories can interpret earthquake luminous, each suffer from particular problems. There are also ambiguities and questions about the location of the light, the...

Rupture, waves and earthquakes

Normally, an earthquake is considered as a phenomenon of wave energy radiation by rupture (fracture) of solid Earth. However, the physics of dynamic process around seismic sources, which may play a crucial role in the occurrence of earthquakes and generation of strong waves, has not been fully understood yet. Instead, much of former investigation in seismology evaluated earthquake characteristi...

Friction, Fracture, and Earthquakes

A primary goal in seismology is to identify constraints arising from the small scale physics of friction and fracture that can provide bounds on seismic hazard and ground motion at the fault scale. Here we review the multi-scale earthquake rupture problem and describe a physical model for the deformation of amorphous materials such as granular fault gouge. The model is based on Shear Transforma...
